Cultural Deficit vs. Cultural Difference
For this post I read an article on cultural deficit and cultural difference and watched two videos about this. The first video I watched was from Fox News, it supported cultural deficit. This video suggested that the group who was inferior decided what was proper and what was not proper. Which is sad but true. The video blamed the children not succeeding because of the way the spoke and believed all of this could be changed by correcting. They did not believe in code switching, which is what the second video by What Matters was about. They stated that they know that correcting children does not work and I agree. Also, I agree with not changing a persons identity. They should not feel uncomfortable with their speaking skills. If that is what they understand why change it? However, they know that if they must code switch when in a professional environment. Teachers cannot just focus on writing either. You can always go back and edit writing. Teachers need to practice real like speaking skills. Teachers need to practice skills like interview skills in the classroom. You cannot just write about it and understand it.
